The proposal intends to be a contribution to the understanding and development of efficient heterogeneous systems to be used for biodiesel production by applying a new synthesis path: interesterification reaction. The advantage of interesterification over the traditional transesterification, is that the both final products can be added to biodiesel without further purification with a significant impact on process design, due to lower environmental impact and less costly and difficult technical steps. Theoretically the project aims to provide from the atomistic point of view a fundamental understanding of the first stage mechanism, by studying the interaction of small esters with surfaces of alkali earth oxides (Mg, Ca, Ba, Sr O, doped MgO with transitional metals). Experimentally the pure MgO and CaO and doped MgO surfaces will tested. The accent will be put on using various pretreatement and preactivation methods to tailor the surface structure (pore sizes, diameters, specific surface area, basicity, topological defects) to increase the activity and reactivity. The reaction conditions will be optimized. The aim of the project is to find a catalyst able to run the reaction towards the final products with limitation of the intermediate compounds, to run at low temperature, in short reaction times using a low ratio between reactants close to the stoichiometric ratio. Moreover the aim is to identify the relation between the structure of the catalyst and their catalytic activity.
