The Structure and the Interpretation of Romanian Determiner Phrase in Discourse Representation Theory: the Determiners

 (SIRDPD)

This work was supported by a grant of the Romanian National Authority for Scientific Research, CNCS – UEFISCDI, project number PN-II-ID-PCE-2011-3-0959, contract number 311, and it is currently under developement at the Univerity of Bucharest.

Summary:

The project aims at a unitary description of the Romanian Determiner Phrase (DP), both at syntactic and semantic levels. A description at this level sheds light on the typological features of Romanian in comparison to both Romance languages and to English.

From the point of view of syntactic theory, the research we propose leads to the determination of the parameters of syntactic variation in the DP domain.

At semantic level, we aim at specifying rules of interpretation (in a model theoretic sense) for Romanian determiners.

This project is an interdisciplinary research in linguistics and informatics, aiming at syntactic and semantic description of a fragment of Romanian and also at developing an application which automatically generates a semantic description given the syntactic description of the fragment.

This project entails the realization of three original products of the research:

1) The first research product is a unitary description of the Romanian Determiner Phrase (DP) by extending and completing the previous research of the members of the team. This description is based on the classification of determiners function of their syntactic and semantic properties, specifying the derivational history of the nominal phrases headed by the respective determiners.

2) Secondly, we aim at specifying rules of interpretation (in a model theoretic sense) for Romanian determiners. First, this presupposes formulating rules of interpretation for Romanian determiners whose interpretation has never been studied systematically, such as the article cel, degree determiners (e.g. mult ‘much’ , puțin ‘little’ (Huddlestone and Pullum (2002)), indefinites (e.g, un anume ‘a certain’, niste ‘some’, fiecare ‘every’). Secondly, it is necessary to complete and unify previous research on other determiners such as the definite article -l (Cornilescu 2006),), the indefinite article un / o ‘a’, the indefinites vreun ‘some/any’ (Farkas (2002b), Falaus (2008)), the free choice determiners such as orice ‘any’ (Jayez and Tovena (2006)).

3) Finally, we will produce, for the fragment of Romanian under study, an application designed to automatically generate the semantics (the interpretation) of a discourse, given its syntactic analysis. This application will contain an interface which will ensure the communication between man and machine, an annotated lexicon, containing the relevant features, and the semantic analyzer itself.

An original contribution of the project we propose is its methodological consisting in the elaboration of an adequate global theoretical framework, through the selection and unification of several current syntactic, semantic and natural language processing theories.

Expected results of the project:

We estimate that we will obtain a description of the Romanian Determiner Phrase (DP), both at the syntactic level, and at the semantic level.

We will determine the parameters of the syntactic variation in the Romanian DP domain and specify the interpretation rules (in model-theoretical sense), for the studied determiners.

We expect that a major contribution of the project will be of methodological nature, namely the elaboration of an adequate general  theoretical framework, by selecting and unifying the current syntactic, semantic and natural language processing theories.

Duration of the project: 36 month.

Begining date of the project: 2011-10-05.

End Date of the project: 2014-10-05.

Main project objectives:

1)The syntactic modeling of the Romanian nominal phrase, so as to permit the explicit correlation of syntactic configurations with the construction rules of discourse representation structures.

2)The formulation of rules of interpretation for Romanian Determiners in a Discourse Representation Theory framework.

3)The implementation of the interpretative rules for Romanian Determiners to provide an automatic discourse interpretation of the fragment of Romanian under study.

Work plan for 2014:

Objectives

Activities Results

1. Syntactic description of other Romanian Determiner Phrase, such that to permit an optimal semantic representation at the discourse level. For the targeted determiners, one specifies their features, that is their lexical input. This description is a preceding step for the realization of the electronic lexicon, to be done during this project phase.

1.1. One studies the following determiners: the distributive quantifier fiecare, the negative quantifiers (negative words included),    the collective quantifiers toti and amanadoi, the indefinites niste and unul.

Fisier de tip .pdf ! ReportEnglish2014; papers submitted for publication.

1.2  Experimental research for validating the results of the syntactic and semantic description for the determiners studied so far: a) obtaining (by using questionaires) data for the frequency and the acceptability of the proposed semantic interpretations.

Constructing a corpus that subsumes the research results regarding the validation of the presence or absence of some syntactico-semantic features (such as specificity, distributivity, domain properties), as well as for the criteria of choosing between apparent synonym determiners.
