Title of the project: Lower Cretaceous depositional system reconstruction of the Eastern Carpathians: climatic, tectonic and sedimentary supply influences

Summary of proposal

The project is focused on the issues:
1. Stratigraphic correlation of the Lower Cretaceous lithological units of the Eastern Carpathians (the Moldavide basin). A stratigraphic chart will be elaborate based on transects crossing the Eastern Carpathian structures. The chart will give informations about the age (sedimentology, palaeontology and magnetostratigraphy).
2. Investigation of the petrography and palaeocurrents, to estimate Lower Cretaceous sediments composition and source areas. A special attention will be given to green and granitoids clasts, key elements for reconstruction of intrabasinal cordillera, a possible source for Cretaceous basin. Major elements, i.e, Al, Si and Ti will be analyzed for estimating terrigenous influx; U-Pb geochronology from detrital zircons will discriminate source areas among tectonic units. 
3. Identification of global Lower Cretaceous Oceanic Anoxic Events in the Eastern Carpathians. OAEs will be evidenced based on the isotope δ13C fluctuation. The major and minor elements content, i.e., V, Cr, Ni, Si, Al, Na, U and Th, as well as the ratios Ni/Co, U/Th and V/Ni and organic matter will be used to estimate the degree of oxygen reduction in the basin.
4. Lower Cretaceous facies model of the outer Eastern Carpathians (Moldavide Basin). Finally, a reconstruction of depositional palaeosetting of the Early Cretaceous times, and climate, tectonic and sedimentary supply influence, will be advanced.
