The School will examine
the theoretical and practical value of the New Institutional Economics (NIE)
for Eastern and Central European countries that are in a process of transition
to market economy. It aims to reposition NIE within current social theory
and to outline the changing context in which institutional inquiry takes
place. The vital necessity of promoting an interdisciplinary approach to
teaching NIE will be discussed. The courses offered through the School will
look closely at conceptualization of institutions, the market and hierarchies
in transitional countries. Careful attention to the structure of rules, social
capital, property rights and contract enforcement will be made. The stress
of teaching activities will be on a social context and empirical evidence
from the region.
