The field of penal studies, a fundamental area of legal studies, is represented by the Criminal Law Department. Its staff includes leading researchers in the field who contribute through their daily activity as well as through courses, and publish materials for the training of young lawyers and the improvement of their detailed knowledge in the field.
The main areas of teaching and research are: criminal law - general and special, criminal procedure, forensic science, criminology, executional criminal law and forensic medicine. The optional courses run by the department with the support of external collaborators are: executional criminal law, forensic medicine, international criminal law.
Notable is that the Department has a well-endowed Forensic Science Laboratory, which plays a special role in the training of future magistrates and in the acquisition of technical methods and good practice needed by a criminal investigation.
The Ana Minovici Institute of Forensic Medicine provides the setting for tutorials exploring the more practical dimensions of the discipline.
