The Department of French Language and Literature, one of the oldest in the University of Bucharest, has always numbered among its members noted researchers and cultural personalities. Many of them have been the school-makers, their names being associated with new directions in the field of French linguistics and literature as well as with the publication of some valuable scholarly works, essential instruments for the training of future generations of French language and literature teachers.

The present members of the department are trying to uphold the same standards as their predecessors, being themselves well-known specialists in the diverse aspects of French literature, Francophone literatures or French linguistics. Among the present research directions of the department-reflected in its Master's degree programmes-we can mention: history and analysis of literary concepts and of Franco-Romanian intercultural confluences, cultural anthropology and history of mentalities, medieval studies, discourse analysis, contrastive analysis, and bilingual lexicography.
