Two Foreign Languages And Literatures

The degree programme in two modern languages and the respective literatures prepares specialists in Philology. The teaching of both languages and literatures covers aspects related to the contemporary period and to their historical evolution, based on modern linguistic and literary theories. At the same time, students are offered the possibility of training in the theory and practice of teaching foreign languages. Some of the languages offered-Czech, Croatian, German, Hungarian, Polish, Romany, Russian, Serbian, Slovakian, Turkish and Ukrainian-are languages of the minority ethnic communities of Romania; students belonging to these minorities thus have the opportunity to study their native languages and so promote the development of their cultures within Romanian.

Graduates in modern languages and literatures may go on to become school or university teachers, researchers in Linguistics, Literary Theory and History, Ethnography and Comparative Folklore, or Foreign Language teaching, editors, translators, or journalists. Some are employed by the Interior and Foreign Affairs Ministries or other departments of government, or by companies dealing with countries where the languages they have studied are spoken. As a result of the increasing demand in this last sector, a new degree programme in applied modern languages was created in 2000 (see 1. 5.). The opportunities available to graduates are enhanced by the wide range of foreign languages on offer: it is by far the widest range available anywhere in Romania.
