The Degree in Romanian with a foreign language and literature provides a preparation for school and university teachers, researchers in relevant fields (linguistics, literary history and theory) and editors; the 'B' subject (a foreign language) also prepares students for work in translation and related fields. As it provides a sound philological base and helps students to refine their powers of expression, the degree has also proved a good background for future writers and journalists.
This degree may be considered the core degree of the faculty, in terms of the number of students and staff involved and of the tradition. Until 1990 it was the only degree offered in the faculty. Since then the emphasis on teacher-training in the syllabus has relaxed somewhat, although the composition of the curriculum still takes account of the responsibilities incumbent on the faculty as a result of the fact that a large number of graduates continue to work in education.
