Abstract:

Friendship, as one of the ‘Five Bonds’ first systematized in the Mengzi, has played an important role in Confucian ethical discourse and training. Like the four other founding relationships that are considered metonymical of all possible human interactions (prince/minister, father/son, elder brother/younger brother, husband/wife), friendship is a complex notion that needs constant re-definition and re-actualization, depending heavily on the context of individual experiences. Standing between the universal model and the particular case of the person, friendship has been much theorized on in different reference texts of the Confucian tradition. It is also an ambiguous bond, being both vertical and horizontal as an interaction between friends who enjoy equal status. This feature of friendship provides us with an opportunity to re-affirm that the supposedly solely hierarchical framework of Confucian worldview requires a more nuanced analysis.

This paper will present the basic views on friendship in core Confucian texts (The AnalectsMengziXunzi, the Fayan of Yang Xiong, etc.), roughly outlining the boundaries of true Confucian ‘friendship’ in contrast with other more simple social interactions. I will then proceed with a case study focused on Yulgok Yi I (1536-1584), the iconic scholar-official of the Chosŏn period, in order to examine the practical applications of that theoretical discourse. His ego-documents or self-narratives (correspondences, poems, farewell gifts to friends) will be analyzed, as well as a few normative texts such as the basic rules of Confucian academies and schools, in order to show how Confucian friendship have been actually narrated and how they might have been practiced as multiple forms of sociability, not least in the very specific context of nascent court factionalism in Chosŏn Korea.
