Swedish Language and Literature at the University of Bucharest

The studies in Swedish language and literature is provided through a three-year program, where Swedish is studied as B language. The teaching is built around three course blocks: A linguistically focused one on grammar, structure, and language history, one on Swedish literature and culture, together with a practical course (oral and written language skills). In the third and final year students have also two separate curs optional, one in Swedish essay writing, one in Norwegian.
When it comes to the literature and culture course, which I am responsible for, an overarching focus is to deepen the knowledge of to what an extent the culture-specific conditions of Sweden and the Nordic countries are different from the Romanian cultural and linguistic context. The course content is consistently more thematic than historically/chronologically oriented - Central eras, periods , phenomena are close studied, such as the Swedish model/welfare state, Swedish mentality , or the so-called " nineties " (1890-1899) as a cultural epoque. Particularly interesting individual characters, such as diplomats Raoul Wallenberg and Dag Hammarskjöld, or children's literature writer Astrid Lindgren, are also focused.
A schematic overview of the curriculum for courses in Swedish literature and culture, during the six terms the program consists of (including some central bibliographic milestones), is as follows :

Swedish Literature and Culture

First term :
Easier literary texts in Swedish presented such as folk songs , myths and fairy tales. Instruction is in English / Romanian. The course manual has partly Swedish texts gathered from a variety of materials for beginners, partly general cultural fact texts in English / Romanian. The examination is a written test with factual questions to answer in English / Romanian, and reading comprehension questions in Swedish (including a short essay to write in Swedish )
Examples from the bibliography :
Swahn , Jan- Öjvind : Maypoles , Crayfish and Lucia. Swedish Holidays and Traditions
Songs by Lisa Ekdahl, Björn Afzelius, Tove Jansson

Second term
Literary texts introduced through the children's literature , which is a specific and very viable tradition in Swedish literature, with several internationally recognized names such as Astrid Lindgren and Tove Jansson. Also poetry of a more traditional and linguistically less complex kind - not least by representatives of the Swedish song (Den svenska visan) – is presented, as well as examples of detective novels ( in easy reading form) - another very vital tradition in the Swedish context. The Course Manual is now entirely in Swedish , still with a broad focus on various central Swedish cultural phenomena.

Songs by Cornelis Vreeswijk, Easy reading books: Sjöwall & Wahlöö`s "Roseanna", Marianne Fredriksson´s "Anna, Hanna och Johanna" Astrid Lindgren: Pippi Långstrump
Text excerpts from Sagor och sanningar (Fairy tales and truths), Mitt i mål, På väg, as well as other course books for students at intermediate level.

Third term
The short story form introduces the study of the more serious, classical literary prose , while some central poets strongly rooted in the Swedish culture is introduced. Meanwhile treated is also Swedish mentality through a variety of sources. To both write and talk about and around the literary and cultural material is now of central importance. During this semester, the whole material is gathered in the course manual , which includes for example:
" Typically Swedish " from Dagmar Hell Tribe: Sverige på svenska (Sweden in Swedish), causeries on Swedish mentality by Herman Lindqvist, Stig Dagerman: some short stories from Nattlekar (the Night games), Pär Lagerkvist : short stories from Onda sagor (Evil fairy tales), short stories by Inger Edelfeldt , Per Olov Enquist , Jonas Hassen Khemiri m fl. , poems by Karin Boye, Sonja Åkesson, Göran Palm.

Fourth term
The course aims to familiarize students with a group of well-established profiles that can be said to represent the Swedish cultural tradition per se. Names that today are widely recognized as enduring symbols of Swedish culture, without much controversy they can be designated as specifically Swedish classics. Also a historic outline is made during the course, supported for example by documentaries about Gustav III and the Vasa ship.
By Hjalmar Söderberg one of the novels The serious game / Martin Birck's Youth / Doktor Glas. The course manual includes among other things texts by and about Gustaf Fröding, Carl Michael Bellman, Evert Taube, Dan Andersson and others. Historical outline in Dagmar Hellstam: Sverige på svenska (Sweden in Swedish)

Fifth term
The theme of the course is partly radical innovators in the literature , the authors who have particularly pointed forward and pointed the way towards a new era, and that still evoke debate and controversy. Partly studied is the emergence of the Swedish welfare state after World War II, and its gradual decline from the late 1980s onwards.
From the bibliography :
Poetry of Edith Södergran, Gunnar Ekelöf , August Strindberg : Mother Love, Miss Julie , Ingmar Bergman: excerpts from The Magic Lantern , Lars Norén : Autumn and winter , the documentaries August and Palme, Carl Jonas Love Almqvist: from Det går an

Sixth term
During the last semester the multicultural Sweden of today is studied, the manual presenting different life stories and works that may be linked to the culturally very creative wave of first and second generation immigrants in Sweden. Also societal problems and opportunities that has followed with growing immigration is discussed, based on current debate articles.
From the course manual: causeries of Jonas Hassen Khemiri , interviews with immigrants active in different areas of Swedish society, a history of the Swedish immigration in Dagmar Hellstam: Sverige på svenska (Sweden in Swedish)
