ABSTRACT

The main goal of this proposal will be to prepare multifunctional materials that are capable to display all the three properties: emission properties, ionic liquid properties and liquid crystalline properties.

This project aims to prepare a series of luminescent ionic liquid crystals based on imidazolium salts and different other mesogenic cations (pyridinium based, branched ammonium amphiphiles) and metallomesogenic units capable to combine emission properties with liquid crystalline properties at ambient temperature. Their mesomorphic behaviour will be investigated by a combination of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarising optical microscopy (POM) and powder X-ray diffraction (WAXS). A correlation between structure and liquid crystalline properties will be established. Suitable candidates will be subjected to further various electrooptical studies.

 

Objectives:

I. Preparation of dimeric ionic liquid crystals based on imidazolium salts and their use in synthesis of dinuclear metal-carbene type complexes.

II. Preparation of branched quaternary amphiphiles based on imine and β-diketonate units.

III. Incorporation of covalent metallomesogenic units by using specific ortho-metallation reactions followed by bridge – cleavage reactions to prepare several different ionic mononuclear species.

IV. Preparation of ionic metallomesogens by introduction of tetrahalometalates or dicyanometalates units through the ionic self-assemble procedure.

V. Investigation of liquid crystalline and electro-optical properties of the new ionic liquid crystals.
